The European Union (EU) has announced a €50 million support package aimed at addressing the growing malnutrition crisis in Northern Nigeria.
This initiative is part of the EU’s broader humanitarian efforts to improve food security and strengthen healthcare systems in the region.

According to the EU delegation, the funds will be directed towards emergency nutrition programs, the supply of therapeutic food, and the enhancement of maternal and child health services. The intervention targets states most affected by food shortages, insecurity, and displacement caused by ongoing conflicts.

Speaking on the initiative, the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Samuela Isopi, emphasized that the support aligns with the EU’s commitment to reducing hunger and improving living conditions for vulnerable populations in Nigeria.

“We are deeply concerned about the worsening food and nutrition situation, especially in Northern Nigeria. This funding will help provide immediate relief and strengthen long-term resilience,” she said.

Nigeria continues to battle one of the highest rates of child malnutrition in Africa, with millions of children suffering from acute malnutrition, particularly in the North-East and North-West regions.

The EU’s latest intervention is expected to complement ongoing efforts by the Nigerian government, UNICEF, and other international partners working to combat the malnutrition crisis and promote sustainable development.
