Tinubu Tells Trump: Nigeria Is a Democratic Nation Committed to Freedom of Religion
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to religious freedom following remarks by the U.S. President Donald Trump, who labelled Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged persecution of Christians.
In a statement posted on X on Saturday, Tinubu maintained that Nigeria remains a democratic nation founded on constitutional guarantees of religious liberty.
“Nigeria stands firmly as a democracy governed by constitutional guarantees of religious liberty,” the President stated. “Since assuming office in 2023, my administration has maintained open and active engagement with both Christian and Muslim leaders while addressing security challenges that affect citizens across all faiths and regions.”
Tinubu rejected claims that Nigeria lacks religious tolerance, insisting that such portrayals fail to reflect the country’s true character or the government’s ongoing efforts to safeguard freedom of belief for all Nigerians.
“The characterisation of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not represent our national reality,” he said. “Religious freedom and tolerance have always been central to our collective identity, and they will continue to be upheld.”
The President emphasised that Nigeria’s constitution provides firm protection for citizens of all faiths and reiterated his administration’s dedication to fostering peaceful coexistence.
He also noted that Nigeria will continue to work closely with the United States and other international partners to promote mutual understanding and strengthen global efforts to protect communities of all faiths.
